Under the patronage of the Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, Mr. Hani Al-Hayek, and the Governor of Nablus, Mr. Ghassan Daghlas, and with the presence of the donor, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Taawon—through its Jerusalem Old Cities Revitalization Program —launched the "Juthoorna" campaign in Nablus at the Tell Balata archaeological site on Wednesday, November 20, 2024, in partnership with Nablus Municipality.
The " Juthoorna" campaign aims to preserve archaeological and historical sites while raising awareness about the importance of protecting our heritage. It supports cultural activities at over 15 significant heritage sites, reflecting our history and roots on this land, especially amidst occupation efforts to erase our national identity and cultural heritage.
The launch event included speeches by Dr. Hussam Al-Shakhsheer, Mayor of Nablus, Mr. Ahmad Al-Farra on behalf of Taawon, the Deputy Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, Mr. Saleh Tawafsha, and the Governor of Nablus, Mr. Ghassan Daghlas.
Prior to the official launch, participating students embarked on an engaging tour that began with a documentary screening, shedding light on the rich history of the Tell Balata archaeological site. Following this, they joined a guided exploration of the site, delving into its significance. The tour concluded with students writing messages on a cloth banner, sharing what the site represents to them as a powerful statement to the world.
The activities continued with a tour of Nablus's Old City, introducing students to prominent historic buildings, landmarks, and traditional industries. The group then visited the Community Resource Development Center, where they participated in storytelling by a hakawati, who shared tales about Nablus's history and heritage. The day concluded with a drawing workshop where students created art inspired by their field tour in the Old City.
The "Juthoorna" campaign is a national initiative aimed at increasing awareness of Palestinian heritage sites by supporting cultural, social, and economic activities at more than 15 significant locations. The campaign is implemented by the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities and other relevant ministries, in partnership with civil society organizations, local authorities, and the private sector, supported and funded by UNDP/PAPP through the TARABOT Palestine Programme.
