About
the 2009 WAY Summer Program:
Youth from Arab and Palestinian descent share common
challenges, dreams, and aspirations as they make their transition from
childhood dependence to adult independence, and from being recipients of
society's services to becoming contributors to national economic, political,
and cultural life. The contribution of these youth in support of the
Palestinian cause can make a great difference and perhaps determine how Palestine will remain on
the future map of the area.
The young are able, willing, and eager to play their full
role in support of the Palestinian cause and sustainable development. Welfare
Association (WA) recognizes that while youth are the leaders of tomorrow, they
have until recently been largely ignored by development planners and
implementers.
To address the above, and recognizing the need to move away
from programming for youth to programming with
youth, and adopting the SOS (Services-Opportunities-Support)
model for youth programming, WA began a process of creating a platform (named
Welfare Association's Youth - WAY) where youth, particularly from Arab and
Palestinian descent, can find an available vehicle to channel their interest
and passion to help Palestine
and the Palestinian people.
The goal of the WAY program is to create a platform where
youth, particularly from Arab and Palestinian descent, can find an available
vehicle to channel their interest and passion to help Palestine and the Palestinian people. Towards
that overall program goal, the project aims at raising the awareness of
youth regarding the Palestinian cause, its roots, current issues and
challenges, and future perspectives through hands-on experience in Palestinian
camps in Lebanon.
Specifically, and through voluntary work and positive exposure,
the project is expected to achieve the following results:
- An enhancement of participants'
knowledge of issues related to the Palestinian cause and the state of Palestinian
refugees in camps in Lebanon,
particularly youth.
- An enhancement of participants'
knowledge of the Welfare Association programs as well as of other active civil
society organizations providing services to Palestinians in Lebanon.
- Connecting youth
from Diaspora and Palestinian youth in refugee camps in Lebanon, and to
better understand the challenges they face, and their needs.
- Building awareness
on ways to help Palestinians, and
nurturing a self enhanced commitment towards philanthropy in the future
