On Tuesday 23 September 2008 Welfare Association in cooperation with Palestinian
NGOs concerned with care of orphaned children, organized two Ramadan meals
for1,500 orphaned children from Ramallah, Jericho, Jerusalem and Tulkarem
districts. A variety of recreational activities were organized in order to
create a joyful atmosphere for the participating children.
The event was part of the first phase of a project funded by
the campaign "For the Children – Sharjah Initiative in Support of Palestine
Children," which was launched by HE Sheikha Jawaher Bint Mohammed Al-Qassimi,
the wife of Sharjah Governor and the Head of the Higher Council for Family
Affairs in Sharjah. This phase aims at raising the spirit of Palestinian orphans
during the festive month of Ramadan in West Bank and Gaza. The provision of
psychological and material support to children was implemented by organizing a
number of activities targeting the orphans during the Holy month of Ramadan. The
activities include group events for orphans and their caregivers. At the end of
each event, educational and recreational presents were distributed to orphans.
During this phase, more than 10,000 orphaned children from all over the West
Bank and Gaza will benefit from the activities.
In the second phase, all orphaned and needy children in
Palestine, who are receiving alternative foster family care or institutional
care, will be reached through coordination with the relevant institutions and
ministries, including private and public schools. The number of beneficiaries in
this phase will reach 15,000 orphans.
This project is in line with Welfare Association objectives to
alleviate the suffering of Palestinian people and support their steadfastness.
Since 2002, Welfare Association has disbursed over US $8 million of direct
financial assistance to more than 33,000 poor families.
